Collaborative Interaction with Public Displays

In interacting, groups exhibit a very special dynamic. If a group of two or more people pass by the public displays, most often just one person becomes the active one who starts the interaction. This person pauses, then actively participates in the interaction drawing the attention of the other group members toward him or herself. Typically the others initially stand by and hesitantly observe the interaction.

In the parts of the investigation in which more than one display was available the other members of the group began to use the free displays and explore the interaction possibilities. Little by little the entire group participated in the interaction. In the cases in which there was only one display, the group became impatient and the most active person was encouraged to rejoin the group and move on.

Picture Gallery

I selected four sets of pictures showing different interactive contents. The evaluation of the experiments and the additional survey is planed to be finished by the end of October.

1. Aura

The mirror is loaded with virtual energy. An aura of this energy develops around the viewer in front the mirror. It reacts to his movements with flame-like clouds that surround him like polar light.

2. Luminary

The display is covered by a pulsating star from bright zeros and ones. Once the viewer steps before the mirror a current of zeros and ones develops around his body. The numbers react to his movements, so he can direct the cloud of number in the mirror.

3. Flexibility

A magic ribbon moves over the mirror. The viewer can take it in his hands and write artful figures on the mirror and his mirror image.

Flexibility

4. Progression

Fast growing flowers follow the movement of the viewer and grow over the entire mirror. Once the viewer gets out of sight the plants shrink and disappear.

Complexity III – Flexibility on all screens

Even though the lights inside the SAP building were switched on for 15 minutes during yesterday´s observation the usage behavior seemed to be normal.

Numbers III

To complete the experimental part of this research project a second set of experiments is scheduled for the end of November. The first of these set-ups was tested today (See the video).

After completing the last experiments the additional survey starts in December.

Survey Pretest

In addition to the observation a survey will be conducted in front of the façade. To check the questionnaire and to determine whether further revision is needed a first pretest was carried out today. The questionnaire will be revised in the following days.

Numbers I

Today, only two out of four screens were activated as can be seen in the following picture. The next set-up Numbers II is planed for tomorrow night.

Complexity I – Progression on all screens

Thanks to a warm November this year, conditions are steady and many people are using the installation. During yesterday´s experiment the behavior of almost 400 passers-by could be observed. The total number of observed individuals now exceeds 2000. In order to analyze the use of the different overlays the effect Progression was played on all screens on the façade. On the picture you can see the two screens in the middle.

A short video of people using this set-up can be seen here.
