Calm Advertising?

See below Miriam Meckel’s and my presentation from the Pervasive Advertising Workshop at PERVASIVE 09:

The workshop topic inspired us to develop a concept of “Calm Advertising” that refers to the vision of “Calm Computing” and focuses on a new way of public advertising that doesn`t aim to shout out lout messages to get peoples attention but enable passers-by to freely engage in the communication with advertising companies.

I am working on a position paper that I will post here. D.M.

Understanding & Designing for the Voluntary Adoption of Community Displays

Following my talk at the Media Facade Festival Berlin 2008 I had a lot of interesting discussions on the interaction models I presented. One of these models was developed by Harry Brignull who sent me a link to his PhD thesis on Understanding & Designing for the Voluntary Adoption of Community Displays and kindly offered to post it here.

In his analysis of interactive displays, Harry divided the process from perception to direct interaction with the featured content into three general phases, as shown in the figure: a) peripheral awareness activities, b) focal awareness activities and c) direct interaction.

Media Facade Festival Berlin 2008

Finally, I defended my thesis at the University of St. Gallen this week :) During the next weeks I will start to publish the main findings of my dissertation.

Today at the Media Facade Festival Berlin 2008 I give the following presentation about PERCEPTION, AWARENESS, AND INTERACTION of public displays.

Media Facades Festival 2008

As part of the Media Facades Festival 2008 I will share my research experiences with the SAP Media Façade with selected artists.

One goal of the festival is an “Urban Screenings on Four Media Facades in Berlin: Media facades are a new kind of exhibition format. International media researchers, artists, architects will gain temporary use of 4 facades in Berlin and explore their cultural, political and social roles. These screenings serve as a demonstrative test platform for the public. They invite a wider audience to gain hands-on experience in this special connection of content, format, and site-specificity, and to take part in a new interactive infrastructure.”

The objective of the Expert and Artist Workshop “is for each participant to produce a piece for one of the 4 selected media facades. The first day consists of public introductory lectures and discussions. The second day is scheduled for exchange within the group together with the screen operators and concerned key figures at the location of each screen. The third day will be reserved for further discussion among the participants and organisers.”

Workshop Cognitive Design 2008

On September, 8th I will give a presentation on “Motivating Human-Computer-Interactions in Urban Space”. For more information visit the conference`s website: Workshop Cognitive Design 2008

EuroITV 2007 in Amsterdam

As part of the EuroITV 2007 Workshop The future of Television: Is it Ambient Entertainment? today, I present the experiments that were conducted with the installation Magical Mirrors.

The goal of the workshop is stated as follows: “Ambient intelligence or ambient media seek to make smart technology available for the consumer throughout his natural environment. Rather than the user explicitly tells a computer system what to do, the system shall act autonomously in the way the consumer desires. Natural interaction, personalization, smart metadata, wireless technology, ubiquitous systems, pervasive computation, and embedded systems are enabler…”

Big Displays 2007

Today, Magical Mirrors was presented at the Big Displays 2007 conference at Cavendish Conference Centre in London. Thanks to the participants for interessting discussions after the talk!
